What Is A Resurrection Plant?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Resurrection plant is another name for the Rose of Jericho. Its scientific name is Anastatica hierochuntica. It is a rather small herb that is generally found flourishing in some regions of Western Asia especially in the sandy areas of Syria. It is also found in Mexico, Texas, Egypt and scattered across Arabia.

The Rose of Jericho has certain behavioural traits that are rather unusual. First it dries up completely, relinquishing all traces of moisture. Next it curls its stems in to a small tight ball. Then propelled by the strong gusts of wind that are characteristic of its native areas it scatters its seeds wherever it goes.

The Rose of Jericho has been nicknamed Resurrection Plant because after drying up so completely, the plant expands and reverts to its former lush green colour. Resurrection plant is not the Rose of Jericho's only nickname- in fact, because this plant has been around for centuries it has also been referred to as 'dinosaur plant'.
