What Is A Cayman?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cayman is a reptile which closely resembles an alligator. Found in Central and South America, the cayman or "caiman" are amphibious by nature. They are found to thrive near the rivers and lakes. The largest of the caiman species is the black cayman which measures about 15 feet. Needless to say, this animal is quite dangerous. The other species have an average length of 5-7 feet.

Caymans and alligators differ from the crocodile family mainly on the structure of their heads. The former have shorter heads which are wide with obtuse snouts. Apart from the other miniscule differences, it is also important to note that caymans prefer freshwater while crocodiles have no issues swimming in salt water thanks to their specialized glands. Crocodiles are more dangerous than alligators and caymans. Cayman Island, by the way are a group of islands forming the overseas territory of the UK.
