    Denisegirl,

Estrous (heat) cycles occur every 4.5-8 months; the African
breeds like the basenjis and sled dogs may only cycle yearly in the spring.  The first day of heat corresponds with the
first day of bleeding—bleeding amount and time is variable from dog to dog.  The bleeding/discharge phase (proestrus) can
last 1-21 days.  It precedes behavioral
estrus (actually called the estrus phase)—where the female becomes receptive and
stands to be bred—this phase lasts 7-10 days.

The uterus may swell slightly but should not be palpable
(felt) in the abdomen.  The vulva will
often swell and of course there is vaginal discharge which originates in the
    uterus.

Please keep her away from non-neutered male dogs while
exhibiting signs of heat.  Male dogs will
be very interested in her during this time and it is important to prevent
    unwanted puppies.
