What Churches Are There In Newbury?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is St Nicholas' Church, a wool church which was built between 1509 and 1532 on the site of a 12th century church. It has been the town's main church for over 900 years. There is evidence to suggest that the church was used as a prison, hospital and stable after the 1644 Second Battle of Newbury.  St Nicholas' Church was built by Jack O' Newbury and his son. Family badges of Jack's Smallwood and Winchcombe can be found throughout the church on roof bosses and in the window glass.

Sandham Memorial Chapel (1920's decorated) is located in Newbury, and contains paintings by the artist Stanley Spencer. There is also the Litten Chapel, which dates back to medieval times.
