S'mores are a traditional campfire treat in the USA and Canada. No one is quite sure when they originated, but there was a mention of them in the 1927 Girl Scouts Handbook. S'mores are made by first roasting a large marshmallow over an open fire.
The marshmallow's degree of 'doneness' is a matter of personal choice ~ some people like it lightly browned while others prefer it charred!
After the marshmallow is heated, it is sandwiched between two graham crackers with a few squares from a chocolate bar. (Graham crackers are cinnamon flavoured and square; they would be called biscuits in the UK.) The residual heat from the marshmallow causes it to melt together with the chocolate. The result is yummy enough to have everyone asking for s'more, which is where the name came from!
The taste is so popular that it has been translated into cereal and breakfast pastries, and has even inspired desserts in restaurants.
