Famous as a womaniser, not surprising that he was married four times.
First wife was Hadley Richardson. They married in Chicago in 1921, emigrated to Paris, had a son (John) born in 1923, and divorced in January 1927.
Hemingway started an affair with Pauline Pfeiffer, in about 1924. They were separated for 6 months in 1925, to persuade Hadley that he was serious about the marriage being over. In May of 1927 Hemingway finally married Pauline in France, in a Catholic ceremony. They had 2 sons: Patrick, born 1928 and Gregory in 1931. This marriage lasted until 1940.
After a few unstable years towards the end of the marriage, Hemingway divorced Pauline in 1940 and married a famous journalist, Martha Gellhorn. Unusually for Hemingway, this marriage ended when Gellhorn left him in 1945, rather than the other way around. They had no children.
Hemingway's last wife was Mary Welsh, whom he married in 1946. They had no children together, although she did have an ectopic pregnancy, what would have been his fourth child. She was another journalist, best known for having once accused Andy Rooney of plagiarism (unproven allegation). By now Hemingway was 47, and perhaps ready to settle down. This was the longest of any of his marriages (15 years). He stayed with Welsh, living in Florida and Idaho, until he died in 1961. Welsh outlived him by 25 years.
