When Was St Paul's Cathedral Built?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

St Pauls Cathedral, the most important Protestant Cathedral in London was begun in 1675 although it was not completed until 1710.  It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
However, St Paul''s was actually built to replace the third cathedral, which was destroyed in the Great Fire.
It is also a very sacred site and a temple existed at this location in Roman times and a cathedral has been positioned on this site since 604 AD.
St Paul's is probably most famous for its Whispering Gallery when you can whisper at one side of the gallery and it can be heard clearly on the other side.
Within the Cathedral there is also a chapel which was renamed in the American Chapel in honour of those Americans who died within the Second World War.  During this war, St Paul's had been viewed as one of the most important buildings which survived the bombing of London, despite coming under heavy attack.
