California is considered to be the most populous state of the United States of America. The state of California is located on the Pacific coast of North America. It shares its borders with the states of Oregon, Arizona and Nevada in the United States. Outside the United States of America, California lies on the border of Baja California in Mexico. Four of the largest cities of the state of California are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco, in order of being the largest. California is very well-known for its Mediterranean climate. The population of the state of California is very ethnically diverse. There are 58 counties in this state.
The Alta California was initially colonized in 1769 by the Spanish Empire, as it was Inhabited by indigenous people for Millennia. In 1821, after the independence of Mexico, California continued to be a part of Mexico. In 1946, after a brief week as the independent California Republic and in 1848, after the end of the Mexican-American war , California got to be annexed by the United States of America and was admitted to the Union. California was the thirty-first state to be admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850.
There are two very important rivers within California. Names of these rivers are Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River. Both these rivers drain the Central Valley and both of them flow to the Pacific Ocean flowing through San Francisco Bay.
