The Himalayas are a mountain range in Asia (Nepal and Tibet). The highest mountain on earth is in the Himalayas, Mt. Everest. The first successful ascent of Everest was in 1953, by Tensing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. The first successful American ascent of Everest was in 1963, by Jim Wittaker. There are many other spectacular peaks in the Himalayas.
