The initial training of a police horse takes aproximately 12 months, however, training a horse for a mounted policeman is a life-long learning process for the horses involved. A mounted police officer is required to to have served at least two years as a regular police officer before he/she will be considered for the mounted police.
Police horses usually work between four and five hours a day and much of this will include additional training in subjects such as riot training or training for coping with large crowds, such as at football matched. It is of uptmost importance that the horse does not get distracted by anything, other than what his rider is telling him. In order to produce the perfect police horse, the police training team will set up situations similar to what the hourse will experience in the future. These could be anything from letting off fireworks in fron tof the horse, to having a crowd of people rush toward the horse. It is of uptmost importance that the hourse remains calm and listen's to his rider.
