Does Hair Dye Cause Cancer?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The causes of most cancers are unknown. However certain risk factors, for example smoking or exposure to toxins at work, are known to be associated with certain cancers. In every case of cancer there are multiple factors at play. Your genes and your general health will both play a part in determining whether your exposure to known carcinogens (cancer causing substances) will result in your contracting cancer. Research that suggested  alink between hair dye and bladder cancer has been contradicted by more recent research and it is now thought there is no such link. Studies have suggested a slight risk that long-term hair dye use could be linked to other cancer such as some types of leukaemia and non-hodgkins lymphoma but there is not conclusive evidence. A further complication is that certain toxic chemicals used in hair dyes before 1980 have been removed from most dyes. It is possible that any link between hair dye use and cancer shown in studies relates to these more toxic hair dyes.
