What Kinds Of Chickens Are Good For A New Hampshire Farm?
We may be getting some chickens for the 1st time this Spring, and were wondering what kinds of egg layers would be okay through the full year. We have heard of New Hampshire Reds, and thought they might do well in NH because of their name. But we don't know much about chickens, so we thought someone could help. Other breeds we liked were RI Reds, Black Star, Red Star, Araucanas, & others. Thanks!

Hi, I researched the different breeds when I got into raising chickens. I bought Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and I have two Light Brahma's. Since your further north than I am, ( I'm in NC) you might want to get some with smaller combs. They are prone to frostbite on the combs and wattles. Make sure your coop is draft free so the cold doesn't blow on them. My guys will be a year old this April and they have laid all winter long. Some breeds the winter doesn't bother the laying process like others. Good luck!

Wyandottes, Brahmas, and most hens of any breed, but Roosters usually have the large combs. I bought the breeds I did for their laying abilities during the winter months. You could rig a heater in your coop to help them from freezing too. The Brahmas have feathers on their feet, which can freeze too. A Columbian Wyandotte is identical to the light Brahma, but without the feathers on the feet. If you need any advice on getting chicks started, let me know
