Try pinching them behind the top of the arm, you only need to do it softly, it gives a quick sting, then you tell them if they proceed you will do it harder. Try it on yourself, it stings. Now try it a lot harder, it kills. And you don't have that 'Raising your hand in a violent smacking action' that scares the kid more then the actual smack itself.
