If you can hear the motor inside the door when you actuate the switch then you will probably need a regulator assembly. If you hear no noise from the motor inside, hold the switch in up or down position and give a stiff rap with your hand midway up the door (inside the vehicle) if it starts working you likely have a motor than is beginning to fail. If this doesnt work though you will need oto pull the door panel and check to see if you have power and ground at the motor connector. This is an important step, if you just check for power at the switch assembly you can be fooled by the switching ground. Unplug the motor connector and install a test light between both terminals of the harness. Work the switch both ways. It should light the light in both directions if the circuits are good. If they are then you have a motor failure. Motors are the most common failure.
