Woolbridge Manor House is a medieval manor house. It is located in the parish of Wool. Wool is a parish located in the county of Dorset in England. It is now located amongst the ruins of Bindon Abbey. Bindon Abbey is a medieval abbey that was built for the Cistercian monks. The Cistercian monks are a sect of Roman Catholic monks that resided in the Bindon Abbey and wear black, as opposed to the standard white, habits (vestments) worn by monks belonging to other factions of the Roman Catholic faith.
Many writers and poets have referred to the ruins of the ancient abbey in their writings. The novelist Thomas Hardy and the poet J.E. Panton are the most famous amongst these writers. It is also the subject of a well-known historical account written by Sir Frederick Treves. In recent times, Bindon Abbey became popular as the place where some of the most important events in the novel Tess of the D’Ubervilles, which was written by Thomas Hardy in the year 1891, were set. It is the manor where the female protagonist, Tess of the D’Ubervilles, spent her honeymoon night with Angel Clare. It is also the place where the corpse of Tess is placed by Angel Clare, who carries her body while he is asleep. Her body was placed in the stone coffin which was the former coffin of an abbot.
