OH no! Please be careful. In 1992 I bought my first Yorkie from a pet store. She had a luxating patella - needed a $1200 Knee operation, collapsed trachea, underbite, she was always a little mentally off - but I adored her. I decided she needed a sister so I went pet store shopping again - but this time the shop told me she came from a breeder that was a vet. Both were AKC registered. I was sure she was healthy. Ugh! She had the best personality but all of a sudden at age 6 she became demonized - not to me but to her sister she never had issues with before. The fights were crazy. Finally the Vet put her on Prozac after a trainer tried and a year of problems. Then a couple years later we found she had an umbilical hernia from when she was born - they cut the cord too close, she had a heart condition and Cushing's disease. She - the love of my heart passed at age 9. Then right after her sister ended up with Kidney disease and passed after a long battle at age 11. These two babies had so many health issues that I know are a result of poor breading. I swore I would never love again. Then an amazing breeder who knew what I went through reached out me me that if I was interested she was having pups soon. After I researched her I found out she was an amazing breeder - many champions and at the time my Lexi's Sire (dad) was the #2 dog in the world. It was the best decision I could make and I consider myself blessed. Just the training alone was amazing - Lexi walked right in my house - found the pee pee pad herself and used it within 10 minutes of her first arrival in my home. I never had to train her. She is an amazing, incredibly loyal, affectionate dog. I have since adopted one of my breeder's retired mom's so Lexi would have a sister as well. Moral of my story - don't impulse buy - know your breeder and if it means having to wait a few months - you won't regret it. Don't buy online - a good breeder will want to ask you questions before agreeing to you. You don't need to be perfect - they just want to know you will do whatever you need to to raise the pup. I think a lot of people are put off when they say you have to apply for ownership. They aren't looking at your credit or morals - they just want to know you will be a loving parent and that is only because they care about the pups they sell - it's a good thing. They aren't going to be overbred, they aren't going to be inbred - although from what I have read some inbreeding is ok if DNA and genetic screening is done I think. Point is they should be bred to the best standards and you are not going to find that in a pet store or online. Many breeders do have sites - but you can't buy a dog online from a breeder...it's just for info reasons. Buying a well bred dog will make all the difference in the future health of your dog.
