Apache is a web server, and allows a computer to deliver content using either the http or https protocols.  It is open source, and usually bundled with Linux distributions.  Windows versions are also available for download.

The server is quite easy to install and maintain nowadays, although you need to be careful if you are inclined to modify the default configuration to squeeze more performance out.
