The word, which originated from the original old language word of Ahf'rait ,which was Arabic in origin, and was the name of a tribe, has now transitioned to the modern "afrid". Which has a meaning of little devil, in Maltese.
The origin of the word itself, is interesting enough, yet what is equally interesting is the similarity of the word, to the English word afraid, which is perhaps an explanation, stemming from the fact that perhaps, people had a fear of this tribe, which in the modern language changed into little devil in Maltese.
It would be interesting to know what linguists think of this.
