It's possible he is just lazy. sometimes older brothers and sisters can do all his talking for him and he decides its easier just to point. has he been assessed by a speech therapist or his gp? . at 19 months there are certain milestones he should reach, but i wouldn't worry just yet. have a chat with your doc.

      * Verbally reward him and encourage early efforts at saying new words
      * Talk to your baby about everything you're doing while you're with him
      * Talk simply, clearly, and slowly to your child
      * Talk about new situations before you go, while you're there, and again when you are home
      * Look at your child when he or she talks to you
      * Describe what your child is doing, feeling, hearing
      * Read to him every day
      * Praise your child's efforts to communicate
Boys are typically a little slower than girls at speaking, but he should have some words by 19 months. Make sure you have his pediatrician check his hearing. You could also try giving him the wrong item when he points. Follow it with

Try not to let him have what he wants by pointing. He realises that is all he has to do

This is perfectly normal just ignore your child when he skweaks and only answer to him if he utters a letter. Ex if he emits a certain sound for a certain toy or food don't answer to him and keep repeating the name of the object in front of him.

My youngest did this exact same thing. We thought he was never going to talk and then when he did, boy did he...LOL I just kept after him. What he was pointing to, I would tell him what it was. Hang in there.
