A joint family or as it is more accurately defined, the complex family is a general term for any kind of familial system which concerns over to adults. The term can describe any type of extended family or polygamist structure of any kind.

The term joint family is particularly used to refer to a family in which the parents' as well as their children's families reside in one house or dwelling. This kind of familial structure frequently consists of multiple generations in the family. In countries like India, the family structure is mostly patriarchal, with the families of the sons generally living under the same roof.

In a joint family structure the workload is divided amongst the members, albeit it is generally not equal. The women are generally playing the role of housewives who cook and look after the entire family.
