The North Norfolk Railway - The Poppy Line. Anyone who has seen the coastal fields of the county of Norfolk in the summer and autumn completely understands why the North Norfolk Railway has been nicknamed 'The Poppy Line'. This railway line was built in 1887 by William Marriott who ran it until 1924 as part of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway. Today this railway is used as a tourist service between towns along the Norfolk County coast, giving them a view of some of the most beautiful landscape in the area.
The Poppy Line runs 10.5 miles using either a steam engine or vintage diesel for the journey. The area it travels through has been designated by the government as an area of outstanding natural beauty and most of it is considered protected. All four stations on the line are within walking distance of the town's centres and attractions. The stations are all historical landmarks in their respective towns/village and many of them offer museums, souvenir shops, and other steam train related interests.
