The largest center of cotton textiles in Pakistan is Karachi. This is because Karachi possesses an infrastructure that is not available in other regions. In addition, there is no shortage of labor in Karachi. Karachi has the advantage of being the only commercial port of Pakistan. Any incoming machinery can be set up without transportation charges and problems. Also, finished and unfinished products can be exported directly without large transport costs. Karachi is the business centre of Pakistan and trade and commerce are major activities. Prices of raw cotton, semi manufactured goods, manufactured goods etc. are all regulated through Karachi.

There are some disadvantages to the textile industry in Karachi. Firstly, it is not located near the cotton producing areas, so raw material has to be transported to the mills and factories from upcountry. Secondly, be¬cause of mainly thermal power generation, the cost of electricity in Karachi is higher. Thirdly, Karachi has suffered since the 1980s from indescribable violence because of ethnic strife, political unrest, ethnicity and very high crime rates. In spite of these problems, Karachi continues to be an important producer of cotton and other textiles. There is a one more disadvantage to Karachi, that is the big neighboring city Hyderabad which is also textiles manufacturing center. The raw material is dividing in both cites and as well as electricity too.
