It's about the ego.. No doubt about it.. But that doesn't mean he doesn't like her... Guys like lots of women.. And they always brag to they're friends. Makes them feel manly and robust. They have this need to feel as though they can get a girl that they think they're friends would think was attractive. Be careful... Men are not as easily attached as women.
