I just bought a seventeen inch laptop with vista home premium and it seems to be slower then my slightly older laptop and its not even full plus it is dual core it has 1 GB RAM and 120 GB

The laptop RAM depends upon the motherboard. The motherboard can facilitate 1GB or 2 GB depends upon its model. Inter Dual Core also comes with 2 GB of RAM.

If your other laptop is only slightly older, and it's running XP then unfortunately you might not get as much speed running Vista on the new one.
Vista uses more resources and processing power, so naturally slows everything else down. If you're using the Aero features etc, turn them off and you might see a slight improvement. There's a few different things to do, try a Google for 'vista speed improvements similar, you should find plenty of tips.
