Can Acid Reflux Disease Be The Underlying Cause Of Recurrent Bacterial ( Hemophilous Influenza ) Chest Infections?

I have had a recurring productive cough for over a year. After several trials of various antibiotics, which did not stop the cough, I have been given zithromyacin which stops the infection for up to a month, then it is back in full force. My doctor thinks the recurrring infection could be caused by acid reflux disease, but I neven have indigestion so I'm skeptical about taking a proton pump inhibitor.
