What Is A Blue Ray?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The correct spelling of this term is blu-ray, without the 'e'. A blu-ray disc is abbreviated as BD. It is a high-density optical disc format. It has the capacity to store a large amount of high-definition video clips and data. It uses a blue-violet laser beam to read and write data onto the disc. A blu-ray disc can store a larger amount of data than a digital video disc (DVD) or a compact disc (CD), even though it uses a smaller and differently-coloured laser than both of them.

A blu-ray disc (BD) uses a blue-violet laser of a much shorter wavelength (405 nanometres) than the more commonly-used DVD or CD formats, which use red lasers of 650 nanometres and infrared lasers of 780 nanometres respectively. Currently a BD format has the capacity to store upto 25 gigabytes (GB) of information per layer, but tests are on to increase the capacity of information that can be stored per layer. The test media being used at present is able to store upto 200GB of data per layer.
