This question has such an obvious answer. The soldiers went to their home towns during their leave in World War 1. They visited their friends and family and spent time with their loved ones. They also looked after the pending affairs of their home and property.

Many soldiers did not have time to travel home so stayed in the closest major towns it was not until l an allowance was made later in the war that soldiers living further away like Scotland Ireland managed to make it home. like all soldiers when out of the line home comforts came first the things most missing a hot bath clean clothes good food uninterrupted sleep and then let their hair down where possible. it must be remembered in the large towns military police were everywhere checking up on soldiers on leave who had to wear uniform at all times complaints about being stopped and questioned many time a day were common. many just wanted to sit in a park for the quiet others went to shows trying to absorb as much normality as the could before returning to a man made hell and possible death.
