Most probably your father in law got MRSA infection from the hospital. Sternal infections are very difficult to treat. Most recent treatment option for sternal infection is use of a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device. But your father in law's problem seem to be chronic and need surgery. This surgery is done to separate non infected parts from the infected one. This might include removal of affected part of sternum. Unfortunately, this is only solution for survival.
