Important historic buildings in Winchester include:

    Winchester Cathedral
    Royal Hampshire County Hospital
    Winchester College

Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England and the second longest in Europe. It was originally founded in 642, and was known as the Old Minster. In 1079, construction of the cathedral began.

Royal Hampshire County Hospital was formed in 1736 as a voluntary organisation. The current hospital buildings were built in 1863, with consultation with Florence Nightingale on the design.

Wincester College is a boys' public school, and was founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham. The school has a very large selection of former notable pupils, mainly authors, poets, dramatists and politicians.

Winchester is best known for the Great Hall, built in the 12th century. It is the only surviving section of Winchester Castle. Sometime between 1222-1235, the Great Hall was rebuilt. It still exists in this form. The hall is known for 'King Arthur's' Round Table, which has hung in the hall from at least 1463.
