Is A Network Key Like A Password?

My new laptop was set up by a co-worker in California and he sent it to me here in Texas. I already had a modem and he sent the router along with the laptop, wireless mouse, etc. I am prompted to enter a network key. What is it, where is it, did my co-worker have to make one up, or can I make up my own? Is it like a password?

network key is not a password but it is sometimes called a password.

The password is generally a login password, the same as hotmail or yahoo. The network key is like password but it is used with the router and the computers on the network in order to encrypt communications among them.
