An indictment, or as it is sometimes referred to Bill of indictment may be defined as an official document that is written when a prosecution lawyer is charging someone with some sort of crime. It may alternatively be said to be an accusation of some sort of crime. For example: 'This report is an indictment of modern science'. In legal jargon it has still another connotation it may be a written accusation that is filed in a supreme court after being returned by a grand jury.
In the United Kingdom in England and Wales in particular an indictment is filed by the public prosecutor like the Crown Prosecution Service who will file an accusation of behalf of the Queen. Thereafter a magistrate will hold a committal hearing and then after deliberation will decide whether or not the charge is serious enough to have a full blown trial.
