How To Grow A Herb Garden?

Answer Question

If you want to grow outdoors and not in pots first choose the place that gets at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day.  Most  delicate herbs dislike strong direct wind and big drops in temperature.
Decide what herbs you want to grow. Study books about herbs, or go to your local nursery,  choose some for cooking some to pick for the house and for the fragrance, some for borders and others like marigold to keep garden pests away. Plant in groups, or clumps (six inches apart), of the same type,  in an open space, in the shape of a square or round chequered with paving stones.
Plant in well drained sandy soil not clay, and water well for the first weeks.
Alternatively Use containers that are at least 8 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches across for each plant. You can ask your nursery for compost to work into the sand. Do not  over water, a good soaking a few times a week in hot weather, will suffice, or stand pots in a basin of water for 20 minutes.
Good herbs to grow are basil (replace regularly) rosemary(hard to kill) thyme, lavender (to pick for the house) Bay (as an edge plant) Parsley, Chives, Spring onion and Fennel for salads, and Origanum. Lemon verbena is wonderful for syrups, and for picking for the house, and does well in a pot.
    Pick and enjoy.

Put your herbs in containers with other plants like tomatoes and flowers. Use marigolds to keep unwanted pest away. Hope that helps.
