    Most probably your son is having osteochondral fracture which is common in children and adolescents. This condition can cause osteoarthritis. Osteochondral fracture can be result of injury. This condition occur when articular cartilage which cover the joint is torn. Osteochondral fracture can occur in weight bearing joints like thigh bone, knee and ankle.
    Osteochondral fracture is diagnosed by x-ray, CT scan or MRI. Treatment depends upon stability of fracture. It con be treated by arthroscopic surgery or by wearing cast. Sometimes cartilage transplantation is done. Sometimes, fragments are fixed by surgery by drilling the bone under damaged cartilage. This will result in some bleeding and blood can stimulate the growth of new cartilage.
