What Is Spam, And How Does It Affect Your Computer?

I have been told that spam can do about same amount of damage that virus can do....any way to check if computer has been affected by it? I have anti-virus, but does not have spam controls. Is it crucial to have spam controls/ spaminator? Any feedback on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Spam is unsolicited electronic mail containing advertising and offers that you don't want.  Usually, spam doesn't have any negative effect on your computer, but some spam messages contain logic bombs, viruses, or worms that self-copy and spread through your computer system when you open the message.  These can do anything from send a record of your keystrokes to a hacker, or completely destroy your computer's internal system.  Spam can also slow down your computer by sending large amounts of information at once to different places on your hard drive.
