What Are The Hazards Of Indoor Swimming Pools

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The obvious and biggest danger is drowning.  This especially applies to private pools without trained supervising lifeguards.  Even when lifeguards are present, very occasionally someone drowns. Every year about 6 people die at public swimming pools (this compares to about 7 people dying at private pools, and over 450 dying in all drowing incidents).  Often, when a person drowns in a public pool, there are complicating factors (such as someone having a heart attack at the same time).

Second biggest factor is the safety of the water.  Again, public pools have the advantage, as water and air quality (bacteria counts and chloroform levels) will usually be monitored closely.  Chloroform is a gas given off by chlorine interacting with organic materials (such as skin, urine or sweat).  High bacteria levels in the water would make it a health risk (gastroenteritis).  High chloroform levels around pools may contribute to asthma attacks or increase the risk of miscarriage.

Falls (from people slipping on tiles) are a possible hazard.

There are also a host of minor diseases, such as athlete's foot, that can thrive in poolside environments.
