What Is A Raffia Palm?

    The Raffia palm also known as Raphia is basically one of the 20 species of the palm kingdom. It is native to the tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, where one of its species is found in central as well as South America. It is found as the prime plant in the Province of Bohol , Philippines, Nso of Cameroon, the Igbo and Ibibio/Annang of south-eastern Nigeria and the Yoruba of south-western Nigeria, among several other West African ethnic nations.

    These palms generally grow upto 16 m tall. They are distinguishable due to their pinnate leaves and infact it is the longest one. The leaves grow up to 25.11 m long and 3m wide. Some of the species of this palm are Raphia africana Otedoh, Raphia australis Oberm and Strey, Raphia gentiliana De Wild, Raphia mambillensis Otedoh, Raphia textilis Welw, to name a few.
