They are not actually known fully, amazingly! Although, as humans, we have been taking cannabinoids for hundreds of years. There are even people who believe early Judeau-Christian groups used cannabis oil in religious ceremonies. The word 'Christ' actually means 'the anointed' in Greek. The anointing oils used in that period were full of cannabis. Was John the Baptist responsible for getting Jesus stoned?

This is surely a good sign (and I'm not religious) that cannabis is of low health risk, even with prolonged use, and over the long term.

Having said that, smoking pot is a lot worse for you than smoking tobacco. There is far more carbon monoxide in marijuana smoke, which makes you more likely to develop respiratory cancers.

There are social effects of cannabis also, such as a lack of motivation, dependence, and of course the likelihood you are going to be associating yourself with people who are happy to do things that are illegal.

The other problem is a monopolisation of the marijuana market with 'skunk' or 'chronic'. (It comes under many names). These are genetically modified strands of cannabis that are a lot stronger and we really don't have any knowledge of their long term effects. Old-school pot smokers who will only smoke grass describe skunk as an entirely different drug.

If you choose to take cannabis, the best way is to cook it and eat it, or use a vapouriser. If you smoke cigarettes already, however, I don't see any harm in adding a little sprinkle.

Cannabis is wrongly illegal in my opinion. There are hundreds of legal 'research drugs' and legal highs sold in shops that have just as many, if not more unknown side/long-term effects.

As a race, if we all smoked more pot, we certainly wouldn't be in the industrial global crisis we are currently in. We'd spend a lot more time sleeping, thinking, and a lot less time murdering eachother.
