A cell membrane has many functions.
1.It encloses many important organelles which perform different important functions.
2.It is involved in the transportation of materials into and outside the cell.
3.It acts as barrier allowing selective molecules to enter the cell.
4.It bears different receptors so it helps in co-ordination.
5.It is involved in Phagocytosis.
6. It is involved in maintaining cell shape.
7.It is important in cell signaling.

Keep the good stuff in, and the bad stuff out.  A cell membrane is a regulator of the materials coming into the cell, as well as for removing material from the cell.  This happens via a vast network of receptors both from within the cell membrane and from outside the cell.

The cell membrane is like the brain. Just as for humans and for animals, the brain is what control's what everything does. For a cell, the membrane control's what other little organisms inside the cell does. For an example, the membrane tells when to drink and when to throw out the waste. As well, how to fight invading bacteria that will make you feel sick.

The outer most boundary of an animal cell is cell membrane. Cell membrane is present inside the cell wall of a plant cell. Cell membrane gives a definite shape to a cell. It helps in the formation of tissues or connection of one cell to the other adjacent cells. In many unicellular organisms cell membrane helps in the locomotion or movement. It gives protection to the cell organelles present in the cytoplasm. Moreover, it is a boundary which separates the cell organelles from outer environment.

It basically acts like a barrier between the actual inside of the cell and the cell wall
