When you start your computer, as soon as it starts in DOS mode(the black screen), start pressing F9 and F8 alternatively (basically there is a specific key for getting the options to get into safe mode and it may be any one of the function keys... F8,F9 or F10).
Then you will get the options list and you can choose to go into safe mode after that.
I am assuming that you have installed a Windows OS on a PC. I have no knowledge of a MAC.
