What Is The Name Of The Canal In Newbury?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is called the Kennet and Avon Canal, and is joined to the Bristol Avon at Bath, and to the Rivers Kennet and Thames in Reading.

The Kennet and Avon Canal was built between 1794 and 1810. It is 57 miles long, and when combined with the Avon Navigation and Kennet Navigation it reaches a total of 87 miles.

The canal fell into disuse in the early 18th and 20th centuries following competition from the Great Western Railway. The canal was restored largely by volunteers in the later half of the 20th century. Today, the canal is a popular heritage tourism destination for walking, fishing, canoeing and cycling, and is important for wildlife conservation. Sections of the canal towpath have been improved, providing a wider path, and it is now more suitable for cyclists and disabled users.

Fishing at the canal is permitted throughout the year. This includes Tench, Roach, Perch, Carp, Bream, Rudd and Pike fishing. The fishing is permitted from the towpath of the canal, though the whole length of it is leased to Fishing clubs and Angling Associations.
