The writer of 'Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah' was Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi. He was born in 770 C.E. at a town named Khawarzim. Khawarzim is a town situated at the South of River Oxus, Uzbekistan (a Muslim country for thousands of years, taken over by Russians in 1873). Al-Khwarizmi was probably the greatest Mathematician in history. He was also a wonderful Astronomer and Geographer.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi is best known for introducing the concept of Algorithm in Mathematics. He is also recognized among historians as the 'founder of Algebra'.

The name of the Mathematical branch 'Algebra' has been derived from his famous book, 'Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah'.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi adopted the use of zeroes in Mathematics. His pioneering work on numerals is known as 'Algorithm' or 'Algorizm'. Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi is also famous for his book on Astronomical Tables. Many of his numerous books have been translated into Latin by Adelard of Bath and Gerard of Cremona. He wrote many essays on Algebra and Arithmetic.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi has an eminent position in history because of his wonderful and influential works in Astronomy, Geography, Arithmetic, Algebra and Logarithms. He died in 840 C.E. at the age of seventy years.
