Which Side Won The First Ever Football League Championship?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first ever football league championship was held in eighteen eighty eight and was won by Lancashire club Preston North End.

As one of the twelve founding members of the football league, Preston won the first ever football league championship with out losing a single match all season.  They were also the first side to complete the league and FA cup double, with Preston winning the FA cup that year without even conceding a single goal in the tournament.

Alongside Preston, Bury in nineteen hundred and three are the only two sides to have won the FA cup without conceding a single goal, with Bury matching Preston in nineteen hundred and three.

Preston are one of only three English teams to have gone an entire league season without losing a single game, Liverpool won the old second division title in eighteen ninety three, ninety four to imitate Preston, but it was over a hundred years later before a top flight side managed the feat, with Arsenal winning the Premier league in two thousand and four unbeaten.
