Just like adults, newborn babies come in a whole range of different shapes and sizes, none of which is more healthy than the other. Each one is unique. Most babies that are born on schedule i.e. Those that are born between 37 and 40 weeks, usually weigh somewhere around 6 pounds 2 ounces. This of course does not mean that you should be alarmed if your baby is born weighing 7 pounds. Their average length can range from 19 to 21 inches. A baby that is significantly lighter or heavier than the average weight range. Is most likely fine, but will probably be monitored by Doctors and Nurses for a short while to make sure that there is nothing wrong.

There are many different factors that can affect the first weight of a newborn baby. The length of the mother’s pregnancy is very important as those babies who are born prematurely can sometimes be significantly smaller than those born on time.

Other factors can include the height of the parents as a tall mother and father could have a larger-than-average baby, the opposite with shorter parents.

Even the birth order can sometimes be relevant. The baby that is born first is often larger than their sibling(s) that are born after them. As can gender, baby girls tend to be smaller than boys, although this can vary of course.

If you are having multiple births such as triplets, then it is almost guaranteed that your babies will be smaller. This is because multiple children not only have the share their growing space in the uterus, then also tend to arrive earlier which leads to a smaller size.

The mother’s health is also extremely important during pregnancy. Facts that can lead to a low birth weight can include a mother’s high blood pressure or other heart problems or the use of alcohol, drugs or cigarettes during her pregnancy. If the mother has diabetes, then the baby may be heavier at birth.

The baby’s nutrition is also important during pregnancy. Proper nutrition is a must for babies to grow in the uterus and after they are born. If the mother’s diet is poor during pregnancy then this can affect how much the child weighs.

Among babies who are full term (at least 37 weeks gestation), the average size in the UK is 7.5 lbs or 3.5 kg. 3.4 kg in the USA. A typical length would be 19-21' long.

This is fairly typical of the developed world; in poorer countries the average full-term newborn baby tends to be a bit smaller, at about 2.6 kg (6lb 5 oz) on average.
