When Was The First Newspaper Published?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Romans had a newspaper which was introduced by Julius Caesar.  It was called the Acta Diurna, which is roughly translated as the Daily News.  It was first circulated in 59 BC.  It was a handwritten sheet and was not sold to people, but was posted daily in the Forum at Rome and other places throughout the City.
It carried news of battles and any political decisions which had been made, as well as some 'social' events such as births, marriages and deaths, similar to modern newspapers.  It was also used by the Senate as a way of communicating with the people.
Newspaper journalism had to wait until the 1600's until the newspapers we would recognise today came into existence.
Newspapers were first published in Germany around 1609 and thereafter became very popular very quickly.  Within 90 years, Germany had around 30 daily newspapers, with other weekly papers also enjoying a good circulation.
