What Is Hemp Good For?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    Probably Medicinal, certainly recreational.

Making rope, twine, paper, cellulose fibres.

Making textiles; a large proportion of clothes in Europe were made from hemp fibres before cotton became available.  Hemp requires much less water, pesticides or fertilisers to produce a similar quantity of fibre as cotton.  It is not as light or easy to work with, though it is more durable.

Birdseed:  hemp seeds are a common ingredient in commercial bird seed mixes (usually irradiated so that they can't germinate).

Food.  Hempseed from varieties not associated with marijuana is sometimes available as a human foodstuff; it is rich in many nutrients good for human health.  Oil made from refining the seeds is also a good source of unsaturated fats. The seeds are not unlike seseme seeds in uses and nutritional value.

Manufacturing: hempseed oil can be used similar to linseed as an ingredient in printing ink, woodstain, varnish, wood resin, for lamp lighting, machinery lubrication or detergents.

Biofuels.  Former actor Woody Harrelson has publicised this possibility by touring vehicles powered by hemp biofuels.
