The Canon PowerShot g6 is the latest model of its series and it went on sale for the first time in August 2004. It is a very powerful camera with a resolution of 7 megapixels. It is easy to use and takes extremely high quality pictures, both for digital display and for printing.
The camera was the successor of the Canona G5 PowerShot, which had 5 megapixels resolution. The increase in output pixel count from the G5 to the G6 is quite a bit more (2.0 million pixels) than from the G3 to the G5 (1.2 million pixels). Although the G6 does not look like the G5, it has the same lens, but with improved coatings, and a similar control layout and features.
A colleague of mine uses this camera for his local family history society, photographing gravestone inscriptions. The society publishes a lot of transcriptions and the best time to view them is in the winter, when there is no vegetation to overgrow the stones. Of course, its cold in winter and the job is helped by the camera – pictures are taken quickly and then viewed in the warmth at home, making transcription much more comfortable.

This camera has been updated with the G7 and G9. The Megapixels don't really matter after about 8 Mp, there's just lots and lots of them. The lens quality is excellent altho both suffer a bit from barrel-distortion when set on wide angle. The G9 shoots in RAW which is a "must" if you are tweaking in Photoshop, stunning results. We own the G7 and is has been the very best: Small enough to go in a pocket so you will take it with you, but the quality is world class
