    Sir Emdund Percival Hillary was a mountain climber and Antarctic explorer from New Zealand who was the first man to scale the summit of Mount Everest (8,850 m/29,035 ft), the world's highest peak, along with Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal.Hillary was born in 1919 in Auckland. When he grew up he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and served his country during the World War II (1939-1945).


    He polished mountaineering skills up by climbing the Southern Alps of New Zealand. He was a member of expeditions to the Himalayas in 1951 and 1952.  In 1953 he joined the British Mount Everest Expedition as one of the leading climbers. Hillary climbed the summit on May 29, 1953, and was awarded knighthood for his achievement later that year.

    Two years later in 1955 he was made leader of the New Zealand party of a transantarctic expedition headed by Vivian E Fuchs. He led his team across Antarctica by tractor and reached the South Pole on January 4, 1958, becoming the first person to accomplish that feat after Robert F. Scott in 1912. He lead a number of expeditions to the Himalayas.
