In order to keep the hens comfortable, you should have a hen house which is 4 feet (1200 mm) by 6 feet (1800 mm).
It is very imortant when thinking about siting the hen house to make sure that it faces south and it needs plenty of windows for the hens to have access to light.
You should also make sure that they have a good 'run' to scratch about in. Hens love to scratch and scuttle around.
You will also need to ensure that your house contains nesting boxes (laying hens can spend up to 6 hours a day in her nesting box). This should be around 14 inches square (around 360 mm x 360 mm) or the hen may experience cramp. The nest box should be around 12 inches (300 mm off the ground).
You will also need to provide roosting perches for the birds to go to sleep in and make sure that the hen house has a water trough and droppins board for their waste.
