Do You Automatically Get Life Insurance When Joining The UK Army?
Answers
No, not in the usual sense of "life insurance".
There is a compensation scheme for military people who are killed (read more). But this is only for deaths occurring as a result of enemy action, while on duty or stationed in an active war (or near-as) zone.
It wouldn't necessarily cover someone who was stationed in a peaceful foreign country (think Belize of the Falklands) and got stabbed in a bar while off duty. And it definitely wouldn't cover people stationed in the UK during off-duty time.
There are many insurance schemes offered specifically to military service-people. These are usually intended to supplement the government's compensation scheme. They may or may not provide life insurance for death incurred off-duty.
Remember to read carefully the non-payment conditions on any life insurance scheme; make sure you're getting the cover you want.
