One of the most common protocols for point to point access is point to point protocol. Nowadays, millions of internet users who need to connect their home computers to server of an internet service provider use PPP. The majority of these users have the traditional modem, a DSL modem, or a cable modem. They are connected to internet through either a telephone line or a TV cable connection. The telephone line or cable TV connection provides a physical link, but to control and manage the transfer of data, there is a need for a point to point protocol. Point to point protocol defines the format of the frame which is to be exchanged between the devices. It defines how two can negotiate the establishment of the link and exchange of data. It is also responsible to take care about how the network layer data are encapsulated in the data link frame. It also defines how two devices can authenticate each other. Point to point protocol employs the version of HDLC. Although PPP is the data link layer protocol, it uses a stack of some other protocols to establish the link, to authenticate the parties involved, and to carry the network layer data.
